This blog post contains the work I did in my lesson with my partner on how to successfully edit. My teacher filmed the footage but we edited it together. My teacher also provided the template for the blog post.
Why is continuity editing important?
Continuity editing includes making sure that items like props or costumes stay consistent from scene to scene. But the more important work lies in editing shots together in a way that leaves viewers thoroughly grounded in both time and space.
Different types of continuity edit
Straight cut (cut)
Eyeline match
Shot /reverse shot
Cutaway / Insert
*Match cut
Footage
Here is the footage that my teacher shot which utilises a variety of camera angles and movements. The scene is very simple, it involves a student standing up and leaving the classroom. A single shot here might be quite boring for the audience, by editing and combining the shots together we can make the scene feel more dynamic.
My Editing Process (CapCut)👻
My first attempt were with quite some errors. Here is how we fixed the errors by cutting to the exact time when the actor moves with the right hand tucked, we match the next clip the same thing so it doesn't look weird to the audience.
Here is my final scene. Editing multiple clips together made the scene better because the continuation between each clips is more seamless and we did more cuts with extra clips to make it seem more cinematic. There was a clip where the actor was supposed to move to the right inside of the left when exiting out of the room so, it made a bit off for the continuation of the clips although, overall together it is more realistic and the cuts are better than the previous.
Reflection ; This tutorial can help us in the project with fixing simple problems such as minor mistakes ( continuity error in editing ) which can impact the whole realism of the whole project, the biggest challenge on editing is trying to see which clips match with the last and the next clip so that the cuts will be seamless without any weird or glitchy movements, we can improve my editing next time by watching YouTube tutorials or learning new features within the editing software to widen my whole knowledge about editing.
